captain_olivers_st__martin.jpgcaptain_olivers_st__martin2.jpg Captain Oliver’s Hotel Resort

The claim to fame of this unique property is you can sleep in France and dine in Holland. Located on the border that separates the two countries, Captain Oliver’s is a long-time tradition on Oyster Pond at the eastern end of St. Martin/St. Maarten.

Founded by Oliver Lange, a former Parisian chef who moved to the islands in the 1980s, the hotel is a cluster of bungalows on the pond ensconced in a yachty/marina atmosphere. The hotel is charming and homey, and there’s plenty to delight the senses like a small zoo that includes monkeys, parrots and crocodiles.

Perched high on a hilltop overlooking the bay, the cottages boast panoramic views from their terraces of the ocean and St. Barthelemy beyond. Each room is furnished in white rattan and decorated with local prints. The units come with double beds and a sofa bed, kitchenettes, marble baths, double sinks, large double closets and vaulted ceilings.

For nautical types, there will be no lack of activity here, the headquarters for the Moorings yacht charters on St. Martin. From here you can take day trips to sail, scuba dive, snorkel or fish. A beautiful beach is only a short launch ride away, and there’s a large freshwater pool on the property.

Another plus is Captain Oliver’s restaurant, which serves up wonderful seafood specialties such as conch and lobster. There’s also a poolside beach bar and the Dinghy Duck for breakfast, located on the dock.

There are several other restaurants in the Oyster Pond area now, but it’s still quiet–and still the most exclusive area on the Dutch side of the island. Though development is happening there, Oyster Pond is still light years away from the hustle and bustle of Philipsburg or Marigot.

esmeralda_st__martin.jpg Esmeralda Resort

Perched on a verdant hillside overlooking Orient Bay yet still within walking distance of the beautiful beach, Esmeralda Resort has as many swimming pools as it does villas - 18. Originally conceived as a site for a single private home, the resort evolved into a private club for discerning home owners before blossoming into the full-scale resort that it is today.

Scattered about the flowering grounds of this decidedly French resort are 18 villas - each with its own pool - housing as many as four units each. Each air-conditioned, Spanish mission-style unit features a fully equipped kitchenette, a spacious living area with a sofa and chairs, color cable television, Spanish tile floors and a private terrace. Each unit has a separate entrance. The accommodations are separated by doors that can be opened or closed to accommodate all manners of living arrangements.

Coco Beach, a casual bar and grill, is on the beach, where the French flavor extends from topless to total nudity (at the far end of the beach). You’ll also find the usual motorized and non-motorized water toys here. A more formal restaurant, L’Astrolabe, is connected to the property and serves breakfast and dinner. Guests of the resort enjoy signing privileges at several local beach bars throughout the day.

grand_case_beach_club_st_martin.jpggrand_case_beach_club_2.jpgGrand Case Beach Club

This delightful and casual hotel is located on a wonderful small beach, where you can swim, walk, and exercise as much as possible. This will be vitally necessary because you’re staying in Grand Case, the culinary capital of St. Martin, and home of 20 exquisite gourmet restaurants. The food at the hotel’s Cafe Panoramique is very good too, but don’t miss out on the cuisine available to you just down the road.

The hotel is located in a quiet section of the island, on a lovely beach. West Indian-style teal-and-white buildings surround a tropical courtyard. The rooms are arranged in five two- and three-story buildings and are available as studios, and one- and two-bedroom units. They are decorated in bright colors and have kitchenettes, terraces or balconies, TVs, phones, and air-conditioning.

A water sports center is located at the hotel, and there’s a tennis court, which is available for night-time play. The sand is white, the water is clear, with areas good for snorkeling in the vicinity. This quiet place will please those looking for simple pleasures, tropical beauty, and wonderful food.

Children are welcome here although it’s not considered a “kids” resort. You won’t find any special children’s facilities or programs but if that doesn’t bother you or the kids, you’ll find this place to be a great value.

pavillion_beach_st_martin.jpg Hotel Pavillion Beach

This small, quaint beachfront apartment hotel caters to the independent seeking peaceful, calm surroundings. A charming three-story hotel, inspired by French-Caribbean design of pastel pink and white trim, features accommodations equipped with air-conditioning, direct-dial telephones, televisions, large bathrooms with hair dryers and balcony kitchens. Daily maid service is also provided.

We visited #11, a one bedroom suite. It was very spacious supporting up to four persons, with Caribbean decor of pale hues and rattan furnishings. There was a king size bed in the master bedroom and a foldout sofa in the living area. White tiled floors extended out through the sliding glass doors to the balcony. A full length mirror was also a plus.

Located directly on Grand Case beach, within walking distance from watersports and the French fishing village of Grand Case where fine restaurants and shopping abound.

lesplanade_caraibes_st_martin.jpgL’Esplanade Caraibes Hotel

In the pretty village of Grand Case, L’Esplanade Caraibes sits perched “on the hill, above the rest,” like the brochure says. The five-year-old condominium resort enjoys panoramic views of the town and its harbor, which attracts an eclectic crowd of yachters. It’s a short walk to the beach and the town’s too- good-to-be-missed restaurants, although the view from the resort is so splendid, you may not want to leave.

Nestled against a bluff, the resort’s two-and-a-half story stucco structure sparkles with wood and tile accents on its facade. And the exterior polish is carried indoors to your studio, loft or one-bedroom suite.

The studios boast most of the features of the more expensive suites, except for the separate sitting and kitchen area. The air-conditioned units come with an ocean view balcony; television and phone, and a full kitchen with a four-burner range, oven, refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster and cooking and dining accessories.

The loft suites on the upper floors are worth the extra cost, even if the double sofa bed goes unused. In addition to more space and all the amenities, you get a master bathroom upstairs, a partial bath downstairs, and a king bed.

If relaxing on the premises is more your style, you can lull away the hours on your terrace or swim in the large pool below your room and have a drink.

Le Petit Hotel’s nine deluxe studios and one bedroom suite each feature air-conditioning, a fully equipped kitchenette and dining area, cable television, a direct-dial telephone, a private safe, two ceiling fans, a king size bed, and a large marble bathroom with a hair dryer and a lighted make-up mirror. nettle_bay_beach_st_martin1.jpg Nettle Bay Beach Club

There are actually four lovely bays on this part of Nettle Baie, where this charmingly French hotel is located. Situated on an overgrown sand bar not far from the town of Marigot, these little peach-colored bungalows are arranged in small semi-circles, overlooking the calm azure waters facing north. Adjacent to each bay there’s a pool, plus a tennis court for the whole complex. On the waterfront is the lovely La Parilla Restaurant.

These comfortable suites, equipped with kitchens and living areas, also have private patios or terraces. Even though there are quite a number of rooms, the way they’re arranged, the property seems small. The rooms are decorated in bright colors, and with a definite feeling of Provence. But outside there won’t be fields of lavender–just a spacious white beach that seems to go on forever, and calm water. There’s a little coral offshore, but it’s not a problem to get beyond it to the sandy bottom.

The hotel also offers timeshares, and is an affiliate of RCI.

orient_bay_st_martin.jpgOrient Bay Hotel

Nestled against the hillside at Baie Oriental and just a five minute walk to famous Orient Beach, Orient Bay Hotel offers quaint West Indian style accommodations, two pools and a restaurant and bar. The thirty-one bungalows feature air-conditioning, Cable TV, telephones, 2 terraces, and full kitchens. The Mezzanine villa sleeps 2 or 3 persons, the Family Villa sleeps 3 or 4 persons (2 bedrooms, 1 shower) and the Comfort Villa sleeps 4 or 5 people (2 bedrooms, each with a shower). A safe deposit box is available at the front desk.

Orient Beach offers several beach restaurants and is also clothing optional - about anything goes here. Positioned on the windward side of the island, it’s also great for windsurfing.

Not unlike a home away from home, the hotel is a favorite of St. Martin lovers. It is also perfect for a romantic getaway or a family vacation.
